How can work get done here?

This weekend is another 3-days holiday although it is confined to a few states within Malaysia, including where my legal firm is situated. I usually don't mind breaks but when you are an employer and you know that there are work to be finished in the office, you do worry.

Just imagine this scenario. Last weekend was a 3-days weekend. The national day of Malaysia fall on a Monday and that became a long weekend. This week, due to a religious ceremony called Nuzul Quran or the day the Quran was bestowed to humankind, the state of Selangor (a state I work and live in Malaysia) along with a few other states consider it a holiday. Nuzul Quran is celebrated on every 16th day of Ramadhan. Too make matter worse, the 16th of Ramadhan is on Sunday. But, in Malaysia, holiday which falls on a Sunday is carried forward to Monday. Unlike certain country I know which just let the holiday be and not compensate it with another day. I was in Netherland during their Orange Day which falls on Sunday. The next day, the offices were opened.

In 2 weeks time, there will be the Eidul Fitri celebtration, which is like Christmas to other part of the world. Trying to not sound like a scrooge, I rarely close my office for a whole week to celebrate Eidul Fitri. I give 1 day extra of holiday than the designated 2 days and the staff can apply for more off-day, which is rarely denied. This year, lo and behold, one of the designated holiday for Eidul Fitri falls on Sunday. So, we have a 4-days weekend to say the least. Coupled with our one day off, my office will have 5 days of extended weekend. Except for me, who rarely take more than the designated holiday, there maybe 3 other persons in the office for Thursday and Friday that week.

No wonder there are too many backlogged cases in court...

Business as usual?
